‘Berg: Wozzeck’ Grammy-nominated for “Best Opera Recording”

The nominees for the 62nd Grammy Awards have been revealed and Naxos’ DVD / Blu-ray recording of Berg’s Wozzeck at the Dutch National Opera in 2017 has been nominated for “Best Opera Recording.”

Conducted by Marc Albrecht, The Financial Times declared Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production as “a beautiful, moving, engrossing production [that] is a consummate Wozzeck, blending clarity, lyricism, compassion, and crushing force.” Christopher Maltman and Eva-Maria Westbroek lead a cast that includes Frank van Aken and Sir Willard White. More information and purchase links are available via Naxos.

“Christopher Maltman and Eva-Maria Westbroek made impressive role debuts as Wozzeck and Marie. Maltman sang evenly and tautly and cut a piteous figure. Stiff and awkward, he moved as if trapped in his own body. Moments of pathos were rare – Maltman’s Wozzeck was driven by terror and stewing violence from the start.” ***** Bachtrack
