Wotan in ‘Das Rheingold’ at Royal Opera House

Commencing his 2023-24 season, Christopher Maltman takes on the role of Wotan in Barrie Kosky’s highly anticipated production of Das Rheingold, the first installment in a brand new Ring Cycle at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This past April, he wowed audiences at Teatro di San Carlo with his role debut as Wotan in Die Walküre, the second opera in Richard Wagner’s Ring tetralogy. Critics described him as “remarkable, his voice authoritative and tormented, with a firm emission” (Bachtrack) and noted that “audiences awaiting the Royal Opera House’s new production next season will delight in him.” (European Conservative)

Sharing the stage with Mr. Maltman includes Christopher Purves as Alberich, Sean Panikkar as Loge, Marina Prudenskaya as Fricka, Kiandra Howarth as Freia, Wiebke Lehmkuhl as Erda, Kostas Smoriginas as Donner, Rodrick Dixon as Froh, Brenton Ryan as Mime, Tin Sung Kim as Fasolt, Soloman Howard as Fafner, Katharina Konradi as Woglinde, Niamh O’Sullivan as Wellgunde, and Marvic Monreal as Flosshilde. Maestro Antonio Pappano will lead these performances in his last season as music director of the company.

Mr. Maltman can be seen as Wotan on September 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26 and 29.
