‘Die Walküre’ at Opéra Bastille

Christopher Maltman jumps into the role of Wotan in Wagner’s Die Walküre at Opéra Bastille on November 8 and 11, bringing his “remarkable” (Bachtrack) portrayal of the conflicted patriarch to audiences in Paris. Maltman has previously bowed as Wotan at Teatro San Carlo and the Royal Opera House, where Seen and Heard International praised his performance as “a revelation” and “nuanced and multifaceted,” saying, “There is, to begin with, a certain cunning, then vulnerability, anger, regret, and the sense of loss. Maltman’s singing of Wotan’s farewell to his errant daughter was three-dimensional, involving and heartbreaking.”

Maltman joins Calixto Bieito’s production, singing alongside Stanislas de Barbeyrac as Siegmund, Elza van den Heever as Sieglinde, Tamara Wilson as Brünnhilde, Günther Groissböck as Hunding, and Ève-Maud Hubeaux as Fricka. Pablo Heras-Casado conducts.
