‘La Traviata’ in Rome
This summer, Christopher Maltman returns to perform with Opera Roma as Giorgio Germont in Verdi’s iconic opera, La traviata. Set against the captivating backdrop of the Terme di Caracalla, these shows are a part of the renowned 2023 Caracalla Festival, which takes place in the historic open-air theater nestled within the ancient Caracalla baths.
Directed by Lorenzo Mariani, this production of La traviata transports audiences to the Dolce Vita era of the 1960s, paying homage to the vibrant spirit of Fellini’s Rome. The sets by Alessandro Camera, costumes by Silvia Aymonino, lighting by Roberto Venturi, and video projections by Fabio Iaquone and Luca Attil beautifully recreate that world with meticulous attention to detail.
Joining Maltman on stage, the stellar cast will also include Francesca Dotto as Violetta Valery, Giovanni Sala as Alfredo Germont, Ekaterine Buachidze as Flora, Mariam Suleiman as Annina, Arturo Espinosa as Baron Douphol, Mattia Rossi as Marchese d’Obigny, Viktor Schevchenko as Dottore Grenvil, Nicola Straniero as Gastone and Michael Alfonsi as Giuseppe. Paolo Arrivabeni conducts.
Mr. Maltman’s will portray Giorgio Germont on July 21, 25, and 28.
