‘Die Liebe der Danae’ at the Munich Opera Festival
This month, Christopher Maltman returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper to reprise his portrayal of Jupiter in Richard Strauss’ penultimate opera, Die Liebe der Danae, following his critically acclaimed debut in the premiere of Claus Guth’s new production earlier this season. Conducted by Sebastian Weigle, the staging marks the company’s first new interpretation of this seldom-performed late work since 1988. It is presented as part of the Munich Opera Festival, which this year celebrates its 150th anniversary and explores the theme “Myth and Music Theater.”
With Strauss’ signature sweeping melodies and opulent orchestration, the opera weaves myth and human emotion into a realm of illusion and playful comedy. Danae, burdened by her father’s debts, is urged to marry a wealthy suitor to rescue her family from ruin. The lure of gold tempts her, yet her heart yearns for genuine love. As she wrestles with this dilemma, a group of mischievous gods descends upon the scene, most notably Jupiter, who disguises himself and steers Danae toward happiness.
Joining Maltman on stage is Malin Byström as Danae, with Andreas Schager as Midas, Ya-Chung Huang as Merkur, and Erika Baikoff as Xanthe. The ensemble also includes Vincent Wolfsteiner (Pollux), Martin Snell, Bálint Szabó, Paul Kaufmann, and Kevin Conners as the four kings, along with Sarah Dufresne (Semele), Evgeniya Sotnikova (Europa), Emily Sierra (Alkmene), and Avery Amereau (Leda).
These performances will take place on July 19 and 22 at the Nationaltheater.
