Role Debut as ‘Der fliegende Holländer’

This October 1, 4, and 6, Christopher Maltman makes a thrilling role debut in Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer, returning to the Bayerische Staatsoper. The titular Dutchman is one of opera’s most demanding roles for dramatic baritone, requiring stamina, vocal power, and dramatic gravitas. Maltman has successfully moved into Wagnerian repertoire in recent years, and has been praised for his interpretation of other iconic roles. Seen and Heard International called last season’s Wotan in Die Walküre at the Royal Opera House “a revelation.”

Maltman joins an excellent cast in Peter Konwitschny’s production, under the baton of  Vladimir Jurowski. Sinéad Campbell-Wallace sings Senta, with Matthias Klink as Erik, Liang Li as Daland, and Natalie Lewis as Mary.

Maltman will reprise the role in July 2026 for the Tiroler Festspiele Erl.
