‘Fidelio’ in Vienna

Christopher Maltman returns to the Wiener Staatsoper this December, appearing in a role he added to his repertoire earlier this year: the villainous Don Pizzaro in Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio. Maltman has appeared regularly with the company since his debut in 2011 in Aus einem Totenhaus, bowing there in Eugene Onegin, Don Giovanni, Arabella, Il barbiere di Siviglia, The Tempest, and more. Maltman will return to Vienna later this year as Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca and Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte.

Singing under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst, Maltman joins an excellent cast in Nikolaus Habjan’s new production. Malin Byström sings the courageous Leonore, with David Butt Philip as Florestan, Tareq Nazmi as Rocco, Florina Ilie as Marzelline, Daniel Jenz as Jaquino, and Attila Mokus as Don Fernando.

Fidelio plays December 13, 16, 19, 22, 27 and 30
