‘Otello’ at Bayerische Staatsoper

On October 29, November 3, 8 and 11, Christopher Maltman will portray the malevolent character, Iago, in Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello at the Bayerische Staatsoper. His first performances in this role at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden during the 2021-22 season received widespread acclaim, prompting The Guardian to proclaim, “Christopher Maltman dominates the stage, exhibiting the vocal stamina and subtlety demanded by the role. His performance of the Credo shocks, as it should, but Maltman’s recitalist prowess allows him to intricately weave the web of insinuation around Otello irresistibly.”

Amélie Niermeyer’s production offers a nuanced interpretation of the Shakespearean play, delving into the psyche of a fragile man and the disintegration of his marriage. Sharing the stage with Mr. Maltman is an exceptional cast, featuring Fabio Sartori as Otello, Eleonora Buratto as Desdemona, Victoria Karkacheva as Emilia, Evan LeRoy Johnson as Cassio, Granit Musliu as Roderigo, Bálint Szabó as Lodovico, Roman Chabaranok as Montano, and Andrew Hamilton as the Herold. Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducts.
