‘Die Liebe der Danae’ at Bayerische Staatsoper
On February 7, 11, 15, 19, and 22, Christopher Maltman joins the Bayerische Staatsoper in Richard Strauss’ rarely performed Die Liebe der Danae. The opera is an ingenious mixture of comedy and Greek mythology, and contains some of Strauss’ most beautiful, complex, and lush music.
Making his role debut, Maltman sings the god Jupiter, joining an ensemble cast that includes Malin Byström in the title role, Ya-Chung Huang as Merkur, and Vincent Wolfsteiner as Pollux. Conductor Sebastian Weigle leads a new production by Claus Guth.
Maltman is known for his excellence in the German repertoire; Jonathan Sutherland of Bachtrack complimented his artistry in another Strauss opera, Arabella, where he sang with “his customary elegant phrasing, strong upper-range and honeyed mezza-voce.”
