‘Die Walküre’ at Royal Ballet and Opera
This spring, Christopher Maltman returns to London to continue his portrayal of Wotan in Wagner’s Die Walküre, marking the next step in a legendary new Ring cycle with The Royal Ballet and Opera.
Mr. Maltman made a powerful impression with his role debut in the first opera, Das Rheingold, last season, earning widespread acclaim. As The Guardian noted: “Christopher Maltman’s Wotan, smooth and mean, was a star turn. He negotiated the role’s psychological and vocal range admirably, lyrical and resplendent as he greeted the rainbow bridge and his fortress of Valhalla, built on the wages of sin. Roll on the next part, Die Walküre.”
Following the success of the opening chapter, Conductor Antonio Pappano and Director Barrie Kosky reunite to lead this bold new production of Die Walküre, the second installment in Wagner’s epic saga. Maltman is joined by a terrific cast including Elisabet Strid as Brünnhilde, Natalya Romaniw as Sieglinde, Stanislas de Barbeyrac as Siegmund, Soloman Howard as Hunding, and Marina Prudenskaya as Fricka, alongside Maida Hundeling (Helmwige), Katie Lowe (Ortlinde), Lee Bisset (Gerhilde), Claire Barnett-Jones (Waltraute), Catherine Carby (Siegrune), Alison Kettlewell (Rossweisse), and Monika-Evelin Liiv (Grimgerde).
Performances will take place on May 1, 4, 7, 11, 14, and 17, with a live cinema broadcast scheduled for May 14, reaching audiences around the world.
